Barrack Room
The barrack room was the soldiers dormitory. Back then there was bunk beds and a bed was shared by two people. There could be a maximum of 26 people in each room. In the room there are examples of a soldiers private belongings. If it has been a long day, you can take a nap here!
HQ
The room is inspired by how the leader of the fort could have lived when he stayed at the fort. The leader of the fort didnt share his room with anybody else and had space for good furniture, a stove and perhaps even his own book collection. Find a good book to read or take a seat in the couch and play a game of chess. The HQ can also be rented as a conference room.
The Quarter of the Engineer
Here you can see a large map of the planned flooding at Copenhagens Fortification. Children and childish adults can write letters with ink or colorize the soldiers journey through the flooding.
The cannon
One of the forts most popular rooms is the toy cannon, where one can attempt to adjust and fire the cannon correctly. Cannon balls have to be hoisted and loaded in the canon, the barrel has to be adjusted and tilted to the correct angle. Only then they are ready to be fired.
The Signal Office
Send messages like the soldiers did during the first world war. Use the telegraph, to send secret morse messages to each other.
Training, training, training
The physical exercise was important for the soldiers. If you take off your shoes, you can train like a soldier. Are you strong enough, to climb up the wall bars and across to the other side?
The Kitchen
The wood stove in the kitchen is still functional, and we use it on special occasions. You can also find the recipe for Pea soup, served with pork. One of the more common dishes at the fort.
The stove still works and is used during some school visits.
Introduction to the history of Garderhøjfort
You can get an introduction to the history of the fort, at the central square. Follow the timeline and see the map of the Fortifications of Copenhagen. The exhibition features a rather random selection of artifacts related to the fort.
You can find the cinema and the access to the main guns as well.
Watch a movie
In the little theatre, you can see a movie about the fortress, and Denmark during the first world war. The movie has English subtitles.
The posterns
The posterns lead through the fortress to the other side where the Infantrybarracks are located. The cold hallways are the same temperature as they were during the first world war. In these corridors, you can see the counterweight to one of the retractable towers. If you continue down the corridor, you will pass the ladder to a 8 mm machinegun.
The gun gallery
On the board, you can see how far each cannon can fire, as well as information about each of the towers on the fortress. On this floor, we have two 75 mm guns, two look-out towers and two 15 cm guns.
You are welcome to crawl up into the look-out tower and take a look.
The twin turret
The large 15 cm twin turret is the only one on the fortress stil in a working condition. It is possible to experience the inside of the tower with a guide. on the tour, you can try to push the tower to turn the direction of the cannons.
We fire the cannons the last sunday of every month at 12 o’clock. .
Medical quarters
Here you will find an exhibition of medical history from the 1850ies and in to the Cold War. You can discover, how medical science has improved in a lot of ways, and i some not at all.
The uniform exhibition
The exhibition shows are number of uniforms from the middle of the 19th century all the way up to about 2015. We also have a collection of equipment for the soldiers – songbooks, hats, helmets, canteens etc.
The Officers’ Mess hall
In the mess halls, you can eat your food, just like the soldiers did, after they were finished with their drills. If the weather is nice, you are welcome to eat outside as well.
